BDP EU-Dimension Online Event Sharing Experiences for More Inclusive Youth Work
The Youth IMPACT project, its main activities and its efforts to strengthen the inclusion of young people who are blind or visually impaired in youth work were at the centre of the event. Participants were also introduced to the structure of the BDP Toolkit, its key areas and possibilities for practical use. The BDP Toolkit was developed through cooperation between project partners, experts and young people, with practical experience playing an important role in its development.
The content of the BDP Toolkit was further tested and refined through international youth exchanges in Budva, Montenegro, and Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where young people had the opportunity to put new knowledge and approaches into practice in different environments. Their experiences were an important part of the online event. Young participants spoke about gaining new knowledge and skills, becoming more independent, building friendships and making international connections. Their stories highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young people to step outside familiar environments, meet new people and actively participate in new activities and experiences.
The experiences of the young participants also connected with one of the key themes of the BDP Toolkit – accessibility. The presentation and discussion highlighted that inclusion is not about making activities simpler, but about considering how information and activities are delivered. Clear verbal descriptions, accessible digital formats and different ways of participating can contribute to greater accessibility. Equally important is listening to people and asking what support they need rather than making assumptions about their needs.
The event therefore brought together the Youth IMPACT project, the BDP Toolkit and the concrete experiences of young people, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas and good practices. It also encouraged reflection on how we can work together to create more inclusive and accessible youth work for young people who are blind or visually impaired.
